A quick perspective from a 21-year-old working in the social space.
Let’s be honest — I don’t use Threads or X (formerly Twitter).
And from what I’ve seen, neither do most people my age.
When I scroll through my phone, I’m on TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat, that’s where my friends are, that’s where the trends are, and that’s where we actually engage. Threads and X might pop up in conversations, but they’re not daily apps for most Gen Z users.
TikTok is where I go for entertainment, quick education, and cultural moments. Instagram is where I stay connected and curate my “social self.” Snapchat is for real, personal conversations, the group chats, the day-to-day stuff that doesn’t need a permanent post.
Threads and X still have audiences and influence, just not the ones brands think they’re reaching when targeting younger users.
Here’s where I see a gap: brands love to talk about being “where the conversation is,” but too often that means chasing shiny new platforms or clinging to the ones that used to matter. Meanwhile, Gen Z audiences have already moved on.
We’re on TikTok discovering trends, using Instagram Stories to interact with brands, and sending product links over Snap. If a brand is pouring money into Threads or X hoping to “reach Gen Z,” they’re probably talking into an empty room.
It’s not that Threads or X are dead, they just don’t align with how we communicate. Gen Z doesn’t want to scroll through long text threads or argue in replies; we want quick visuals, relatable voices, and content that fits into our rhythm of constant scrolling and sharing.
Brands that get it are shifting focus toward authenticity and native content, the kind of posts that look like something your friend might share, not a press release disguised as a meme.
On TikTok, that might mean leaning into creators or trends. On Instagram, it’s interactive stories, reels, and community-building. On Snapchat, it’s behind-the-scenes or exclusive access.
Each platform has its own language, and the brands that succeed speak it fluently.
If there’s one takeaway for marketers, it’s this: go where your audience actually is. Don’t pour resources into platforms your customers have already scrolled past.
Sometimes the smartest social strategy isn’t about chasing what’s new, it’s about knowing who’s still paying attention.
